Issue Notice:
  • Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawong (Chuang Bunnag), was born on Friday, December 23rd, 1808 at the end of the reign of King Buddha Yod Fah Fah the Great. His administrative competence became evident throughout the reigns of Kings Rama II, III , IV and V. Upon King Rama V's ascension to the throne, he served as Regent for the King who was still underage. His ability was evident in his suppression of corruption and those who meant harm to the country and in his management of inflation and counterfeit money schemes. He was knowledgeable in military affairs, Western customs and diplomatic relations. He pioneered ship building by being the first Thai to have freight built in the Western style. The first light house at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, a landmark for navigation, was built from his private funds.
